Sigur Rós live

Some of us had heard that Sigur Rós was amazing. We gave them some listens on album and didn't get it. Then we were told they must be seen live, so three of us went to see them at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. The weather was misty and threatening rain and then four figures came on stage in outfits resembling steampunk and launched into beautiful sonic overdrive. The main fellow played his electric guitar with a violin bow, the bass player wore a top hat and the drummer a crown. The conspiracy was grumpy going in but in the end, when the confetti exploded into the night sky and the sonic booms opened the sky to pour down rain, we were completely blissed out. These guys are creating music of the heavens.

Tim Barsky

The Conspiracy went down to the Climate Theater (285 Ninth St., San Francisco, CA 94103) and completely flipped out over Tim Barsky's new show 7 Beggars. Barsky is a flute beatboxer/storyteller at the top of his game. He records his voice in layers and creates soundscapes to tell his stories over. It is absolutely incredible (directed by the fabulous Jessica Heidt) and runs for three more weeks. Go to www.climatetheater.com

7 Beggars

I have no idea why Tim Barsky is not a huge household name; he is a mega-talent. Based in Oakland, Barsky is an unbelievable beatboxer, heartfelt storyteller, poet, flutist, and even a hip-hop harpist. This show is an urban reworking of a 19th century epic folktale by Reb Nachman (the founder of Breslov Hasidic Judaism). The story has many levels involving magical visits from a series of beggars, each imparting wisdom about love and justice, war and revolution. At times this plot can be confusing to follow, but it serves simply as a loose structure for Barsky to combine his personal narrative and beliefs in quite an emotionally affecting show. He shares the stage with the very talented Brandi Brandes, who plays all sorts of live percussion, while he electronically loops a sound tapestry of rain, wind, traffic sounds, and beats created live with his voice to underscore the story. Barsky switches easily from some clowning worthy of Cirque Du Soleil to syncopated poetry about Oakland’s violence. The small and unassuming Climate Theater, under the new and thoughtful direction of Jessica Heidt, makes true to its motto: Small Theater, Big Art. -- NATHANIEL EATON
